Principles and Rituals Around Food
When To Eat
In our MANIPURAKA region, otherwise known as our solar plexus or 3rd chakra contains our digestive fire or AGNI. This digestive fire is closely related to the sun. When the sun is out, your digestion is functioning at its very best. Eating meals during the time when our metabolism is optimal, not too early in the morning, and not too late in the evening.
Eat lighter foods in the morning to get through “heavy” time of the day which is between the hours of 6-10. The body and mind are just gearing up to reach the mid day point where our digestive fires are at their highest to assimilate and metabolize that lunch. The most important and largest meal then, is at lunchtime since our AGNI or our digestive fire, is at its hottest just as the sun is at its peak between those hours of 12-2. By using all of our five senses, we truly connect to the energy of the food which becomes our blood, our plasma, our tissues and our happiness in life!
How We Eat
- Devoting at least 30 minutes per meal to sit down and appreciate, eat, and digest isn’t too much to ask. Personally, I need 1 hour to feel calm and focused from sitting down, silently or otherwise expressing gratitude, eating and then slowly resuming my day.
- Set a place for yourself to eat if eating alone. Just because it may be only you doesn’t mean you can’t set the table for yourself. One fourth of our food is taken through the sense of sight. You are worth it.
- Play music while you cook/eat. Whatever the cuisine choose music that brings a sense of peace or happiness to the space! Fun!
Saying a little prayer, mantra, etc before beginning to eat expresses thankfulness for the food which will become a part of you.
Smell the food
By taking in the aroma of the food before eating, you are recognizing the sense of smell. Enjoy all of the different fragrances.
Touch the food
Since most food that we eat require use of a spoon or fork in our culture, (or maybe we just don’t like getting our hands dirty and feel like Neanderthals :) we won’t pick up the food to feel it. You can however, connect with the food while preparing it.
Our five fingers have minor chakras. When we touch the food, we send signals to our digestive system that we are about to ingest food.
